Positive offset truck wheels. Most oem wheels, and most wheels in general, will have a positive offset. A wheel’s offset can be positive, zero, or negative: Most factory rims come with a positive offset, which is achieved when wheel manufacturers place the hub mounting surface to the street side of the centerline.
Generally speaking, most factory wheels, especially on trucks, have a positive offset to begin with. Automotive concepts can help you find the right custom wheels for. Positive offset is when the hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel.
Zero offset wheels have a mounting surface deeper within the wheel, causing it to stick out a bit more from the vehicle’s fender. On the other hand, if the hub mounting surface is positioned toward the brake side of the wheel, then we call it negative wheel offset. Wheel offset is one of the major determining factors on whether a wheel will fit your car or truck.
Backspacing refers to how much space there is between the back side of the wheel and the mounting surface of the wheel. Wheel offset is the distance in millimeters from the center line of the wheel to the mounting surface. Negative offset is when the hub mounting surface is located closer to the inside wheel flange in relation to the centerline of the wheel (see picture above).
Having the right wheels for your vehicle, be it a truck, suv, or sedan, is very important. Positive wheel offset is when the hub mounting surface is in front (more toward the street side) of the centerline of the wheel. With the declared positive offset of 40, the wheel's mounting pad is located 40mm from the center line, towards wheel's front face, being 40mm from the center line position which is at 88.9mm.
It is common to find a positive offset in newer and front wheel drive vehicles. Offset is usually stamped or engraved into the wheel and is measured in millimetres of ‘et’ [et is the short form of the german word ‘einpresstiefe’ which literally translates as ‘insertion depth’] positive offset wheels have their mounting face toward the front face of the wheel. Positive offset means that the mounting plate is in the outside half of the wheel, toward the wheel face.
A wheel can come with a zero offset, positive offset, or negative offset. In a wheel with zero offset, the mounting surface of the wheel is on the centerline. You can see how a positive offset will tuck the wheel assembly further under the fender, while a zero or negative offset pushes the wheel out towards or even past.
A “negative” offset is where the mounting surface of the wheel is closer to the inside (brake side) of the wheel. Check out the diagrams below for a visual illustration of each offset type. Zero offset occurs when the hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of wheel.
Another way of measuring wheels is to refer to backset. Positive offset is still outboard, but now they are referring to the hub offset rather than the rim offset (very convenient). The offset is considered positive if it’s a positive number, negative if it’s a negative number, and zero if the number is 0.

If the mounting surface is closer to the face of the wheel it is known to have a positive offset and if the mounting point is closer to the inside of the wheel it has a negative offset. This means the wheels have a positive offset of 25 mm. The more negative the offset, the more aggressive stance you will get.
A negative offset wheel usually has a deep lip zero offset. Positive offset means that the center of the wheel is moved towards the vehicle. Most wheels have the offset embossed on the mounting surface or on a spoke on the back side of the wheel.
Zero wheel offset is when the hub mounting surface is in line with the centerline of the wheel. Negative offset means the mounting plate is on the other side of the wheel’s centerline, farther toward the suspension. Most of the time, changing wheels should be to fit the correct width tire on the correct rim width.
Negative offset is when the hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheels centerline. A wheel with positive offset will also help by shifting the wheel's center closer to the trailer frame. As a general rule of thumb, most front wheel drive vehicles have a positive offset.if you want to put wider wheels on your vehicle than oem, you generally need to reduce the offset.
